How to Transfer a Shopify Theme to Another Store

Moving a Shopify theme to a new store is more nuanced than it looks. Whether you're rebranding, scaling into multiple storefronts, or rebuilding a site from scratch, the process depends heavily on where you purchased the theme and what you actually need to move. This guide, NextSky walks through every method, plus the licensing rules and post-transfer checklist most merchants miss.

Method 1: Duplicate Your Theme (Same Store, Safest Option)

If you want to create a staging version of your theme or safely test changes without touching your live store, the built-in Duplicate function is the right tool.

When to use this:

  • Testing a redesign before publishing
  • Creating a backup before significant changes
  • Experimenting with new sections or features safely

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Themes
  2. In your Theme library, locate the theme you want to duplicate
  3. Click Actions > Duplicate
  4. Shopify creates a full copy, including sections, templates, theme settings, custom code, and any app blocks embedded in the theme
  5. The duplicate appears as an unpublished theme. Preview and edit it before going live

What you get: A complete, independent copy of the theme. Changes to the duplicate do not affect your live theme.

What this doesn't do: This method is same-store only. It cannot move a theme to a different Shopify store.

Method 2: Download and Upload the Theme File (Store-to-Store Migration)

This is the standard method for physically moving theme files from one Shopify store to another. It transfers the code — but not the Theme Editor settings.

Steps:

On the source store (where the theme currently lives):

  1. Go to Online Store > Themes
  2. Find the theme in your library and click Actions > Download theme file
  3. Shopify sends an email to the store owner's address with a download link
  4. Download the .zip file to your computer — keep it as a .zip, do not unzip it

On the destination store:

  1. Go to Online Store > Themes
  2. Click Add theme > Upload zip file
  3. Select the .zip file you downloaded
  4. The theme uploads as an unpublished theme in your library
  5. Preview it thoroughly before publishing

What transfers with this method:

Transfers ✅

Does NOT transfer ❌

All theme code and templates

Theme Editor settings (colors, fonts, content)

Custom sections and layouts

Navigation menus

Custom CSS and JavaScript

App configurations and blocks

Liquid code modifications

Metafield definitions

Section schema definitions

Uploaded images/banners used in theme settings

The biggest gap most merchants miss: Theme Editor settings aren’t included in the theme file. After uploading the theme to a new store, you'll need to reconfigure visual settings and re-upload any section images, as both are stored separately for each store.

Method 3: Paid theme transfer via shopify support

If the theme was purchased from the Shopify Theme Store and you want the license moved to a new store (so you continue receiving updates and support), follow this path.

Prerequisites:

  • Both stores are owned by the same account owner email
  • You are closing the original store permanently
  • You understand the original store cannot be reopened after the transfer

Steps:

  • Download the theme file from the original store (as described in Method 2) before closing anything
  • Remove all copies of the theme from the original store, including renamed duplicates
  • Upload the theme file to the new store
  • Contact Shopify Support through the Help Center and request a license transfer
  • Provide: theme name, original store URL (.myshopify.com), new store URL, and your account email
  • Shopify processes the transfer and may offer a refund on the original invoice

Optional: If you'd rather not close the original store, the alternative is to purchase the theme again for the new store and then contact support about a potential refund on the first purchase.

What else needs to be migrated separately

A theme transfer only moves the design. After migration, you'll still need to:

  • Recreate navigation menus and reconnect them in the Theme Editor, since menus are stored at the store level.
  • Rebuild Theme Editor settings such as section layouts, content blocks, colors, and typography. Taking screenshots beforehand can save time.
  • Recreate metafields and dynamic content, including field definitions and any associated data.
  • Reinstall apps and embedded widgets (reviews, upsells, countdown timers, etc.) and reconnect any app-related theme integrations.
  • Configure store-level settings again, including shipping, taxes, payments, and checkout options.

Products, collections, and customers can be transferred via CSV export/import. For a more complete and structured migration, tools like Matrixify can move products, customers, pages, and other store data with greater control.

Common Issues and How to Handle Them

  • "Action required: licensing issue": The theme doesn’t have a valid license for the new store. You can purchase a new license, request a license transfer through Shopify Support, or remove the theme if it won’t be used.
  • Theme customizations missing: Only the theme code is transferred. Theme Editor settings, layouts, and content must be recreated manually, ideally using screenshots from the original store.
  • App sections broken or missing: Reinstall the required apps on the new store, then re-add their app blocks or sections through the Theme Editor if needed.
  • Theme looks different: This is usually caused by missing menus, metafield data, or app configurations. Check and restore each element one by one.
  • Theme purchased by a developer: Ask the developer for the purchase email or license details. If unavailable, contact Shopify Support, who may be able to locate the original purchase record.
