How do I change my store currency?

What you are seeing

Your prices show in the wrong currency, or every visitor sees the same currency no matter which country they are in. Customers abroad then have to convert prices in their head, which is one of the most common reasons a cart is abandoned.

Why it happens

  • The store currency was left at the default chosen when the Shopify account was created.
  • You have only one market. With a single market, everyone sees one currency. Showing local currencies requires a market per region.
  • Shopify Payments is not set up. A market cannot be given its own currency until Shopify Payments is active.

Pick the section below that matches what you need.

1. Single currency

Use this when you sell to one country, or you want every customer to pay in the same currency.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Store details.
  2. In the Store currency section, select your new store currency from the list.
  3. Click Save.

Result: every price on your storefront is shown in the new currency.

2. Multi-currency

Use this when you sell into several countries and want each visitor to see prices in their own currency.

To sell in multiple currencies you need the Geolocation app by Shopify, which gives visitors a country and currency selector and suggests the right one for them.

Step 1: Install the Geolocation app

Steps:

  1. Install the Geolocation app by Shopify.

Result: the app appears under Apps in your Shopify admin and can show the country selector on your storefront.

Step 2: Add a market

Steps:

  1. Go to Settings > Markets.
  2. Click Add market.
  3. Name the market and pick the countries it covers.

Result: the market exists, but still uses your store currency.

Step 3: Set the currency for the new market

Steps:

  1. Go to Settings > Markets.
  2. Click Manage on your new market, then open Products and pricing.
  3. Select the currency for this market.
  4. Click Save.

Result: visitors in that market see prices in the currency you selected, converted from your store currency.

You must set up Shopify Payments before you can give a market its own currency. Until then the currency field stays locked to your store currency.

When to contact support

Contact support if the currency is correct in your Shopify admin but the storefront still shows the old one after a hard refresh, or if a price is formatted oddly in the theme (missing the symbol, wrong decimal separator, or the currency code shown twice). Which currencies are available, and the conversion rates behind them, are decided by Shopify rather than the theme.

Send this with your first message:

  • Your store URL, and the URL of a page showing the wrong price.
  • The country or market you were browsing from.
  • A screenshot of the price as you see it, and of your Settings > Markets configuration.
  • Theme name and version: Laurel 1.0.0, shown under the theme name in Online Store > Themes.
  • A staff account for the support team.
